3 Women (1977)
3 Women was made based on a dream of Altman’s and follows three women played by Sissy Spacek, Shelley Duvall, and Janice Rule as their lives become strangely intertwined. Nearly plotless, this film wanders without clear direction and lets the performances of these actors stand-alone, filling in the eerie and beautiful world Altman creates. One of his stranger works, 3 Women shows Altman paying homage to Ingmar Bergman’s Persona while craving out its own unique place within the landscape of 70s American film.
