Film Screening: The Suspended Step of the Stork (1991)
Join us for a special screening of The Suspended Step of the Stork (Greek: Το Μετέωρο Βήμα του Πελαργού), the acclaimed 1991 film directed by Theo Angelopoulos. The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival and is widely regarded as one of Angelopoulos’s most important works.
About the Film
Set in a border town in northern Greece, the film follows a journalist (Gregory Patrick Karr) who encounters an elderly man (Marcello Mastroianni) living among refugees awaiting approval of their papers. Convinced that the man is a prominent politician who mysteriously disappeared years earlier, the journalist embarks on a journey to uncover his identity. Along the way, he meets the politician’s former lover, played by Jeanne Moreau.
Through its meditative storytelling and striking imagery, the film explores themes of exile, displacement, identity, and the meaning of borders in the Balkans and beyond.
