TO EXPLAIN THE WORLD: Revisiting Restrepo

April 20
 @ 6:00 pm
 - 10:00 pm

A screening and conversation honouring the legacy of war photojournalist and filmmaker Tim Hetherington

Fifteen years after the death of photojournalist and filmmaker Tim Hetherington, this intimate screening returns to his work.

Restrepo (2010), co-directed with Sebastian Junger, follows a platoon of U.S. soldiers deployed in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley. Shot over the course of a year, the film offers a close, unmediated portrait of life on the front lines, capturing presence, perception, and the experience of being there.

Ronit Novak interviewed Hetherington in 2009 and will share a short excerpt from that conversation as part of the evening.

The screening will be followed by a brief virtual conversation with Sebastian Junger, reflecting on the film and its legacy, followed by a casual mingle.

Presented by The Grain Foundation, a Toronto-based nonprofit exploring AI, creativity, visual culture, and how images shape what we understand to be real.

Light refreshments will be provided. Screening begins at 6:00 PM sharp.

A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Tim Hetherington Trust.
