INI437Y1 Experiential Learning Program

INI437Y1 Urban Experiential Learning in Toronto and the GTA

Central to the Urban Studies Program is the notion of experiential learning. The explicit representation of this in the program is through the core course, INI437Y1.

INI437Y1 is our fourth-year seminar/internship course. It offers students the unique opportunity to study advanced topics in urban studies through placements in relevant internship positions with governmental and quasi-governmental organizations involved in the administration and management of urban areas. In addition to weekly seminar-based classes, students will participate in unpaid internships for eight hours per week while assigned to a non-profit, urban-focused organization based in Toronto.

Past placement organizations include the City of Toronto, Evergreen Brickworks, the Centre for Social Innovation, the Toronto Community Housing Corporation, the Canadian Urban Institute, MaRS Discovery District, and Spacing Magazine.

Who should apply? Fourth-year Urban Studies students who have completed INI235H1 and INI236H1 will be given priority for registration. However, high-achieving, third-year Urban Studies students and non-Urban Studies students have also successfully enrolled in this course in the past. Strong academic achievement is the key criterion. Students interested in taking this course should be prepared to commit extra time for the internship component of this course.
