CSI 50th Anniversary Reunion

2025 marks 50 years since the Cinema Studies Program was first offered as a minor at Innis College. Since evolving into the Cinema Studies Institute (CSI) in 2007, our program has graduated 17 PhD, 194 MA, and thousands of bachelor’s degree students. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of CSI with a brunch and panel discussion at Innis College.

Join us at 10am for a brunch reception in the Innis Lobby, with catering courtesy of Cheese Boutique and alumnus Ilir Pristine (BA ’01 Cinema). Following brunch, head inside Innis Town Hall at 11am for a panel discussion about the Toronto New Wave with esteemed filmmakers John Greyson, Srinivas Krishna, Ron Mann, and Clement Virgo.

Starting in the 1980s, a group of enterprising filmmakers put Toronto on the cinematic map with a series of fresh and innovative works that earned the label of the Toronto New Wave. From I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing to Rude, Speaking Parts to Sam and Me, Imagine the Sound to Masala, Scissere to Urinal, these films collectively heralded the arrival of new and exciting voices in Canadian cinema. Join a cross-section of these filmmakers for a candid discussion of the challenges and triumphs that defined this pivotal period of cultural experimentation.
