About the Event

The Toronto Turkish Film Festival is proud to present the feature-length documentary 30 Years with Kardeş Türküler, a profound chronicle of a musical and political journey that began at the Boğaziçi University Folklore Club in 1993.

More than just a documentary, this film is a testament to togetherness and a celebration of children, women, nature, and a fraternity of cultures and languages that transcends borders. It brings to the screen a rich tapestry of history, poetry, and art, featuring legendary figures and collaborators such as Hrant Dink, Neşet Ertaş, Reem Kelani, Sezen Aksu, Arto Tunçboyacıyan, and the Sayat Nova Choir.

The film captures the three-decade legacy of Kardeş Türküler as they navigate and reflect upon the social and political realities of Türkiye’s recent history through the power of music. Since its acclaimed premiere, the documentary has garnered significant recognition, including the Special Jury Prize at the 32nd Adana Golden Boll Film Festival. It further solidified its international appeal as a finalist at the Boston Turkish Film Festival’s Documentary Competition and was featured at the Munich Turkish Film Days.

The Heart of the Film

Through a blend of archival footage, resonant silences, and unforgettable performances, the film explores the dualities of the human experience: loss and joy, resistance and tenderness, grief and hope.

This screening is an invitation to the Toronto community to sit together, listen deeply, and celebrate 30 years of music and folk dance. It is a moment of remembrance and a call to imagine a world bound by love, solidarity, and hope.
