The Urban Studies Program and the Canadian Film Forum present a special screening of Kensington Market: Heart of the City. On April 8, join for a screening of this documentary film followed by a discussion with filmmaker Stuart Clarfield.

Kensington Market: Heart of the City tells the story of generations who have lived in the neighbourhood over the last 160 years, the personalities present today, and the forces that are impacting the market’s future. This film explores the rich community in the market, the pressures it faces under developers and landlords, and hopes to activate audiences to help protect the market for generations to come.

Director Stuart Clarfield directed the feature drama Welcome to the Parade at the age of 23 as student at York University in Toronto and it was selected to screen in Canadian Perspectives at TIFF, the World Film Festival in Montreal, was broadcast in Canada by TMN and distributed globally by Isme Bennie International. Stuart went on to attend the Canadian Film Centre as a director, in its first full year of operation at Windfield Farms in Toronto.

Stuart was a founding partner of Northern Outlaw Productions Inc. and co-produced the dramatic TV Series Love Hurts, broadcast in Canada on City TV and Fujisankei TV, Japan. Stuart has since directed two feature documentaries; The Journey Home (2014) and the upcoming Kensington Market: Heart of the City, released in October 2024.

Stuart’s international feature film credits include consulting Editor on the feature film Under Western Eyes, selected for competition at the Berlin Film Festival and as Norman Jewison’s Director Observer and 2nd unit Director on the Warner Bros. feature film In Country for Warner Bros. starring Bruce Willis.

Stuart has also written dramatic screenplays for Dirty Bird, an adaptation of the Keir Lowther novel and Radar Love based on his original story. Stuart has worked with a number of major Canadian music artists as a director including; Bruce Cockburn, RUSH, Oscar Peterson, Peaches, the Viletones and others.

He is BFA Honours graduate of the York University Dept. of Film in Toronto, and has an MBA from Babson College, Wellesley MA. Stuart is the Executive Producer and Director of The Mission Media Company Inc. in Toronto, ON, Canada.
