On November 12, Helga Stephenson will deliver the 2024 Harold Innis Lecture titled “Hopes and Dreams: Life Inside Film Festivals.” Helga will talk about her time as the director of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, and now her more recent involvement with Human Rights Watch as the Founder of the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival. Award-winning filmmaker Deepa Mehta will join to moderate a discussion and Q&A after the lecture.
Helga is a Canadian film industry executive and member of the Order of Ontario. Born and raised in Montréal, Québec and educated at McGill University, she started her career as a publicist at the National Arts Centre. In addition to her work with the Festival of Festivals (now TIFF), the Academy of Canadian Cinema of Television, and the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, Helga has also worked with the Havana Film Festival, the Reykjavík International Film Festival, and is one of the founders of the Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival.
