We are delighted to announce that the Agenda Committee of Academic Board has approved the reappointment of Professor Charlie Keil as Principal of Innis College for a second term from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2026, including a one-year administrative leave.
Innis College has benefited greatly from Professor Keil’s student-centred leadership. Among his many achievements over his first term as Principal, Professor Keil has enhanced the student experience via structural and staffing changes to the revitalized Innis Library and student life operations, in supporting registrarial enhancements, and in building strong connections across the University and within the community at large.
Under his leadership the College launched “Starter Kit” – an online initiative to support students transitioning into the University, with a focus on international students. Furthermore, Professor Keil led a successful First-Year Foundations pilot hosted by Innis – a series of small-scale departmental seminars that enhance the student experience and increase faculty engagement with the College. Students, staff, faculty, and alumni/ae admire his passion for the College and value his openness and approachability.
Professor Keil has undertaken an ambitious plan for improvement and expansion of the Innis College facilities. His dedication to alumni relations and stewardship will continue to drive this project forward in the coming years.
Cross-appointed to the Cinema Studies Institute and the Department of History, Professor Keil has extensive experience in University administration. Prior to becoming Principal of Innis College, he served as the Program Director (2005-07) and Director of the Cinema Studies Institute (2007-2011; 2012-14), during which time CSI became an EDU-A and developed M.A. and Ph.D. programs. He previously served as Graduate Coordinator, Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama (1999-2001), and Co-Chair, Council of Humanities Chairs (2012-14).
Professor Keil’s dedication to student engagement in the classroom has been recognized by the Faculty of Arts & Science (Outstanding Teaching Award, 2015) and the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (Distinguished Pedagogy Award, 2019).
