Innis alumna Ishita Aggarwal receives Governor General’s Award for gender equality

Congratulations to alumna Ishita Aggarwal (HBSc ’15 Innis), the 2022 recipient of the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case (Youth).

This award recognizes individuals who are continuing to advance gender equality in Canada. Its name pays homage to the historic 1929 decision to include women in the legal definition of “persons,” handed down by Canada’s highest court of appeal.

A fourth-year medical student, Ishita’s many actions include launching Mom’s the Word, a non-profit providing sexual, reproductive, and maternal health support for vulnerable women.

Ishita is now one of 226 remarkable Canadians who have been recognized for their outstanding achievements and commitment to advancing gender equality, since the award began in 1979.
