Franklin Lecture with McKenzie Wark

On March 25, acclaimed writer and scholar McKenzie Wark will deliver the 2024 Ursula Franklin Lecture, “From Automatic Writing to Automated Writing.” In her lecture, Wark will discuss current AI text generation within the longer history of automated writing techniques.

The Franklin Lecture is a collaborative venture cosponsored by Innis College’s Writing & Rhetoric Program, the Centre for Culture and Technology, the Centre for the Study of the United States, the Department of Social Justice Education, and the Knowledge Media Design Institute.

McKenzie Wark is known for her writing on critical theory, digital media, transgender studies, and autofiction.

Her numerous works include A Hacker Manifesto (Harvard University Press, 2004), Gamer Theory (Harvard University Press, 2007), The Spectacle of Disintegration: Situationist Passages out of the Twentieth Century (Verso, 2013), Molecular Red: Theory for the Anthropocene (Verso, 2016), Capital is Dead: Is This Something Worse? (Verso, 2019), and Sensoria: Thinkers for the Twentieth-First Century (Verso, 2020).

Most recently, Wark’s writing has engaged modes of authotheory and memoir, in Reverse Cowgirl (Semiotexte, 2019), Raving (Duke University Press, 2023), and Love and Money, Sex and Death (Verso, 2023).

 

The Franklin Lecture is held each year at Innis College’s Town Hall in honour of the enduring legacy of Ursula Franklin. In 1984, she became the first woman to be honoured with the title of “University Professor” by the University of Toronto. Dr. Franklin continues to be known for both her significant scientific achievements and her contributions to the humanities and community justice.

The Franklin Lecture features invited scholars who bring the critical study of science, media, and politics to bear in their visions of new political futures.
